Helping Business Owning Families Through the Great Wealth Transfer – A symposium with CREME at Aston University in partnership with The Family Business Network
Wednesday 26 May 2021, 9-12:30
FREE, Online event
This symposium event with The Centre For Research In Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship (CREME) at Aston university will discuss family businesses approach to ownership and wealth transfer across family generations.
It is predicted that in the next 30 years around £5.5 trillion of wealth will be transferred in the UK, peaking in 2035, and has been termed ‘The Great Wealth Transfer’. Many business-owning families find it difficult to transfer ownership and wealth across family generations. PWC estimate that each year a 100,000 family businesses transfer ownership and that around a third fail during this period. When it goes wrong it can result in the loss of viable family businesses, and break-up families.
The event will aim to share an understanding of ownership and wealth transfer within family businesses, how perceptions of intergenerational justice informs transfer decisions and how the UK’s tax and inheritance laws shape this process. It will also consider the common issues that these families face and how they can be better supported to ensure successful transfers of ownership and wealth into the next generation.

Farm Shop & Deli Show, NEC
The ‘This is Cumbria’ group are preparing to attend the Farm Shop & Deli Show at the NEC with their branded destination stand, following the success of their first trade event in April 2019.
The initiative was formed in 2018 when a group of Cumbrian producers set out to create a ‘big impact’ trade stand that would position the very best of the county’s food, drink and produce in front of thousands of key buyers. The initiative was supported and coordinated by The Family Business Network and Thomas Jardine & Co, alongside sponsors Cartmell Shepherd and Enterprise Answers. Many other local businesses that work with the sector also pledged their support for the initiative, assisting with branding, design and printing.
This year, with eleven confirmed Cumbrian producers on board and the continued support pledged by sponsors, the group aims to build upon developing national awareness and championing Cumbrian brands.
North West Family Business Awards 2021
The North West Family Business Awards are organised and run by The Family Business Network, and provide a fantastic opportunity for family businesses of all shapes and sizes to share and celebrate their success stories.
The inaugural North West Family Business Awards in 2020 took off in first class style, beneath the wings of the Concorde at Manchester Airport.
We are fully committed to celebrating the North West’s amazing family businesses in 2021 with #NWFBA2021, however are currently unable to give a date for our awards ceremony due to covid-19.
How we do this is still in the planning, as it is our intention to host a live Awards ceremony, rather than one online to protect the vibrant and special atmosphere of the NWFB Awards! With this in mind, we are holding off setting a definite date until things are a little clearer, all the while keeping the health and safety of our attendees and our team at the front of our minds.
In the meantime, we would invite you to make an expression of interest so that when the time comes, you will be best placed to get that application form in and begin your #NWFBA2021 journey.
