Sue Howorth, founder of The Family Business Network has been speaking topically about the make-up of family businesses and what makes them unique.

“Recently there have been many discussions focused around family versus commercial culture and how to create a lasting legacy for the next generation. The Family Business Challenge Series on the Institute of Family Business website has encapsulated a lot of this content and is definitely worth reading. I’d ask you to consider what you hope your legacy will be as you read.”

Speaking from a personal perspective, Sue says “Personally, I hope my legacy will be as a true champion for family businesses, achieved by continuing to build the trusted safe community that you are already part of as a member of The Family Business Network and by being a voice for family businesses when they need it.”

Here at the network, we have certainly found the demand for further insight events across our regions is overwhelming and features at the heart of our members feedback, driven by a natural curiosity and intrigue around how other family businesses are structured and run. Insight events have become the flagship of the network, so we are working hard to create a new and exciting series.

Speaking about the Insight events, Sue says “It’s the open-hearted stories and peer-to-peer learning that sets them apart from other similar events.  Attendees also get to ask those burning questions that are specific to running a family business. If you are a family business and would like to open your doors and tell your story (not always as easy as you think!) or know another family business who you wish would, then please contact me.”

Preparations for the third annual Family Business Conference on Thursday 11th October are also well under way.  This year boasts a brilliant and action-packed agenda with 18 different family businesses involved on the day and lots of inspirational talks from a great line-up of contributors and speakers.

We can’t wait and must say a big thank you to our conference partners – Business Doctors, Cartmell Shepherd, Cumberland, Enterprise Answers Lamont Pridmore, PWC, Western Pension Solutions and RSM.
